Impact stories from our courses in Germany

Theatre directors and businessmen collaborating on arts and culture projects, supermarkets working with opera houses, volunteering projects...all a result of Common Purpose courses in Germany

Hamburg

"Apprentice-Check"

As a result of their Common Purpose experience a group of participants, among them leaders of the banking sector, consumer good industries, public services and charitable organisations, decided to develop a project for school children. The leaders offer advice for pupils, to check job application forms, and even mock interviews. It is designed to prepare them to apply for apprenticeship places.

Stuttgart

Volunteering

Knowing that Alcatel Lucent encourages the idea of volunteering because they know that the promotion of voluntary commitment of employees is an important part of HR development, a group of participants from 2009 worked with their employees to arrange a day working on a garden project of a multi-generational housing development in Heslach. They have now organised this as an annual project.

Frankfurt

"Walk of Fame"

The lack of interest in art and culture among teenagers in Frankfurt coupled with rising isolation in their living environment represents a big problem as it has close ties to vandalism. At the same time, cultural institutions such as museums complain about the shrinking number of visitors.

Making the connection between both problems on one of our courses, a group of alumni started up a long-term project of co-operation between the "Start-Haus", an education centre for young people with a migrant backround, the "Städel", an art gallery and museum, the "Liebieghaus", a sculpture museum and the "Schirn Kunsthalle", an art gallery. All four institutions work together to build up an open-air museum that integrates street art and therefore makes the connection between generations possible and encourages the creativity of young people.

Leipzig

Theatre for everybody

A connection between a supermarket chain and the local concert hall came about after participants met on a Common Purpose course. The idea is to motivate potential audiences to visit cultural events and plays by offering tickets in-store.

Ruhr Metropolitan Area

Melez

After meeting on a course in Essen in 2008, a top executive from Deutsche Bahn AG and a director from a nationally renowned theatre developed a joint venture to integrate MELEZ, an annual "festival of cultures" in the Ruhr region, into the greater framework of Essen's European Capital of Culture celebrations. A train full of local artists and activists will collect aspects of industrial, urban and cultural diversity and take them all to the MELEZ closing event at the Jahrhunderthalle in Bochum. The train will become an exhibition platform for the creative scene of the region and the train stations on the way to Bochum will be transformed into concert stages and party venues!
