How a large financial services organisation gained new business connections in the local market after one of their Assurance Directors took part in a Common Purpose course

Andy attended a Common Purpose course in Birmingham which he says was: "an excellent opportunity to learn, share experiences, expand networks and understand what makes the local community tick."

As well as benefiting him professionally, Andy says that PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP has also benefited from him attending: "I made business connections with some of the speakers/facilitators which I have already started following up. The course provided me with an easy route in to the local market which I may otherwise have struggled to initiate."

He says that the course has made him a better leader at work because: "It challenged some of my existing views on the world by providing a different perspective. On the one hand this has developed my empathy towards others and on the other it has shown me how important it is to develop your own opinions and be brave in sharing them. I now try harder to put myself in other peoples' shoes and consider the wider implications of my opinions and actions."

"On the first read, the wide and varied agenda can look daunting, but the key development for me was not so much the chalk and talk sessions (which were few and far between) but the experience of just being there and doing something different. We had conversations and debates about issues I simply wouldn't come across in my day job and this challenges your whole outlook on life. You will develop as a person, the benefits of which extend beyond the work environment."

"It gives you a perfect opportunity to reflect on where you are now and where you would like to see yourself heading in the future."
