"In the Netherlands, where there is little or no tradition of citizenship, Common Purpose has a difficult job: to engage individuals from all parts of the community, and inspire them to transform society."

Starting a new programme

Can’t find a programme in your country? Find out how Common Purpose is developed in a new city or country.

Programmes are run by independent organisations set up in each country or city, which operate under license from Common Purpose according to the principles set out in the Common Purpose Charter.

Common Purpose's campaign to improve the way society works extends internationally through the work of Common Purpose International. This is a separate company which is responsible for developing Common Purpose programmes in new countries.

Cities interested in having a Common Purpose programme and becoming a licensee partner work with Common Purpose International's staff. Together, they set up new, independent, locally funded, not-for-profit organisations under local legislation.

Local staff take the lead in each country. Common Purpose International's development staff assist with fundraising, recruitment and the design and overall running of the programme.

Local programme staff have access to expertise on curriculum, skills and training, facilitated by strong IT links. They also have the opportunity to exchange ideas with their counterparts from other countries.

As Common Purpose programmes develop in new countries, they contribute to Common Purpose's bank of good ideas and shared expertise. Graduates of the programmes are encouraged to make links across national boundaries to share ideas and experiences.

Our structure has been designed to make this happen, to allow individuality that is appropriate for different countries and cultures while also offering support and the opportunity for collaboration.
