"In the Netherlands, where there is little or no tradition of citizenship, Common Purpose has a difficult job: to engage individuals from all parts of the community, and inspire them to transform society."

Grasp new opportunities

Grasping new opportunities, thinking on a grander scale, opening up new markets and collaborating to achieve positive change…it’s all in a day’s work for Anil Singh.

As the Chief Executive of Manningham Housing Association in Bradford, Anil Singh’s thoughts and actions affect the lives of many thousands of people. He is thinking bigger thanks to Common Purpose.

“Despite our relatively small size, we have been able to punch well above our weight due to the impact we have across the region, “ he says, “and this, in turn, is a direct result of the networking and influencing skills I developed through Common Purpose.”

Anil attended a Matrix leadership development programme in West Yorkshire.

“Since I attended the Matrix programme, I have urged all our directors to do the same. This has been particularly useful in encouraging people to see outside their area of specialism, which is absolutely vital for business development – and is great for their own self-confidence.

Anil also attended the Common Purpose “20:20” programme for leaders whose sphere of influence is expanding to a regional, national or international level.

“20-20 gave me a greater insight into the context of decision-making on an international scale and the right mechanisms and strategies for influencing those decisions. It helped me understand the challenges but more to look forward to the opportunities that are emerging as world markets change.

“From my own organisation’s perspective, 20-20 encouraged me to think on a much grander scale. This thinking was then the driving force behind my creation of the Firebird Joint Venture Company – a major commercial company jointly owned by five housing associations including our own, which will be the main residential vehicle in West Yorkshire to secure funding for new developments.

”Only by thinking outside our own day-to-day perspectives can we really make big changes happen. Common Purpose taught me how.”
